Sarah Ibukunle, the 15 year old fish seller who was killed on March 12, by armed robbers who stormed First City Monument Bank in Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

Sarah who was a JSS 3 Secondary School student, that had aspirations to become a lawyer was hit by a stray bullet, when the armed men who were in military uniform laid siege on the area as they fired shots indiscriminately. Three policemen who were escorting a bus of expatriate oil workers were also killed.

Sarah was laid to rest in a plain wooden coffin at the Ikoyi Cemetery. Her coffin was surrounded by her relatives, friends and teachers.

Sarah’s classmate , Inidara Friday, said Sarah’s attitude was different on the day before she was brutally killed. He said,

She was gentle. She did not play around like other pupils. But that day, she played a lot with her friends. I was surprised to see her in such mood; may her soul rest in peace.

It was also revealed at her burial that the mortuary which insisted on a N100,000 burial bill paid for by her family before they would release her body, rescinded its decision on Monday and released her remains to her family without collecting any fee.

Her aunt also revealed that a well meaning Nigerian had given them the N100,000 needed. She said,

The following day it was published that we needed N100,000 to collect Sarah’s corpse, a pastor came and gave us the money. I also thank people who have been coming to sympathise with us. This kind of incident shall not be your portion.”

Such a tragic loss of a young life. Victim of a society that failed her!
