Girl Power!

INEC hasn’t made an official announcement yet, but it seems history was made yesterday (April 11) as Senator Aisha Jummai Al-Hassan became the first woman to be elected Governor in Nigeria.

The All Progressives Congress candidate beat her PDP rival Darius Dickson Ishaku in a close battle for the Governorship house in today’s Governorship & State House of Assemblies elections.

While Al-Hassan is the first elected female governor, she isn’t the first democratic governor, that distinction goes to Virgy Etiaba, who became Governor in November 2006, when the then Governor  Peter Obi was impeached.

Congrats to Aisha Jummai Al-Hassan!
