Looks like we can finally put an end to the Jollof Rice Wars between Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Liberia & any other West African country that feels the need to throw their hat in the ring.
A winner has been declared!
It all went down on July 2, 2017 at the Jollof Festival in Washington DC, when Nigerian Jollof was crowned the King of Jollof! Bow down Ghana & Senegal!
According to African Dream, Atinuke Ogunsalu of Queensway Restaurant & Catering in Maryland, US did us all proud when she became the winner of the first ever Jollof Hackathon during Jollof Festival In Washington DC.
Ogunsalu won in spite of Ghana Jollof being favoured to win at the event which was attended by over 600 Jollof rice enthusiasts.
When it was time to make their final presentations to the judges it was only Cameroon, Sierra Leone, and Nigeria that were left standing as the Ghanaians had unfortunately sold out and did not have a back up to present to the judges.
Each finalist was given five minutes to present their dish to the judges who based their decisions on participants’ presentation, taste, and originality.
One of the judges Chef Otoo had this to say about Atinuke Ogunsalu’s jollof rice dish,
Not only did it capture a great taste and healthy combination of ingredients in her meal, she did an awesome job at presentation and that was something very pleasing to the tongues and eyes of the judges
Ogunsalu went home with US$1000 coworking services from event partner I/O Spaces and an opportunity to become a Chef at Jollof Caviar; an upscale African Fusion Restaurant Opening in Washington DC in 2019.
