As black women we have a very special relationship with our hair and extensions…weaves, wigs, relaxers, braids…we have tried them all and the latest Bantu “Lagos Barbie” video addresses that.
13 piece musical collective Bantu have just released the visuals of Lagos Barbie, the first single off their Agbero International album which was released in July 2017. See the album review here.
The Bolaji Kekere Ekun directed visuals follow a hair obsessed young lady (played by actress Nengi Adoki) who finds herself on a time travel through several decades of popular women’s hairstyles while trying to get her latest weave done.
It was fun watching the throwback hairstyles our moms and grandmas use to rock and the attention detail, cinematography and production of this video is top notch.
According to the band, the tongue in cheek chorus calling on ladies to “wave your weaves in the air” is a commentary on the love of wigs and weaves by women in Lagos.
Bantu frontman, Ade Bantu explains further the message of Lagos Barbie,
No Lagos big girl who spends a fortune keeping her hair wants to wave it in the air Click To Tweet
We are aware of the absurdity of this message, knowing that no serious-minded Lagos big girl who spends a fortune keeping her ‘Barbie’ looks would want to wave it in the air, but we also know that they lyrics are such that will make everyone pause and think ‘hold on, wait a minute. Did I just hear right?
