Mavin Records First Lady – Tiwa Savage is one Nigerian female who has defied the odds set against women in our society to achieve success in a male dominated industry. But her views on gender roles would shock you!

Savage who just released her Sugarcane EP to critical acclaim, appeared yesterday (Oct. 4, 2017) on Beat 99.9 FM’s ‘The Midday Show with Toolz‘, where she aired her views on the issue of gender inequality in Nigeria and the larger African society.

Speaking on how women have to work 20 times harder than men to prove themselves in not just the entertainment industry but most career fields in Nigeria, the 37 year old mom of one said,

It’s a reality. I’m not going to say I’m completely comfortable with it but it is what it is. You have to deal with it. If it means you have to work 10 times harder than your male counterparts, don’t complain about it, do what you have to do. We all celebrate people like Oprah and Mo Abudu and we don’t actually realise what they have to do to get to that point. They probably had to do 20 times more what the male counterparts had to do. But Once you get there, you don’t complain about how you got there. So, whatever it is you have to do as a female, you just have to get it done.

Speaking on her marriage crisis last year she spoke on the public’s reaction to her interview saying,

It just reaffirmed my opinion about how women are regarded in the society. You are wrong whether you were right or wrong…in a situation…especially in relationships. We’ve been taught that the woman makes the house, everything is our fault whether you are at fault or not

And if you thought Tiwa was a feminist of the “men & women are equal persuasion”, you thought wrong…The singer who was recently named one of BBC’s 100 inspirational and innovative women for 2017 had this to say,

I might rub a few feathers by saying this but I also don’t think men and women are equal, I don’t think that’s how God created us, especially in the household anyway. So I think as females when we realise that we can be strong in our career, when we are home we have to realise that the man is the head of the house.
