The Extra-Terrestrial has finally happened - albeit in commercial form. But here we are.
Well, nearly 37 years since original release, Sky has continued this beloved story of friendship by reuniting the E.T. with Elliott. The movie won Academy Awards for its iconic music (Best Original Score) and groundbreaking technology (Best Visual Effects). Despite being a commercial for Xfinity (which isn't almost as cringeworthy as you're thinking), it's actually really touching.
It did take a company like Xfinity to bring E.T. back to screens in 2019, even if screens today mean smaller screens at home. "During his stay, E.T. learns that Elliott now has a family of his own and that technology has completely changed on Earth since his last visit". However, he comes to realise that things are MUCH different than they were 37 years ago. Also, E.T. still seems to have a fondness for Reese's Pieces because he devours a few cupcakes with some sprinkled on top of the icing.
The film will air on NBCU cable network Syfy today and is available on demand for Xfinity TV subscribers.
"We're honored to work across our Comcast NBCUniversal family of companies to reunite these beloved characters this season", reads the Comcast website. Also, anyone who visits a Xfinity retail location can pick up a special E.T. coloring book and candy! "It's really a win-win", said Thomas in a statement.
"Looking at the storyboards, I could see exactly why Steven [Spielberg] was really behind it", Thomas added. They care about the way it connects them to other people.
We don't want to spoil the ending, but it is certainly emotional. "It's a ideal story for the holidays at a time when our emotions are very close to the surface".
