The President apparently took note of the article and Duffey asked the Pentagon's chief financial officer about the plan to support Ukraine the same day the article was published.
"Given the sensitive nature of the request, I appreciate your keeping that information closely held to those who need to know to execute direction", the email reads.
The new emails shed light on the opaque and unorthodox process by which the Trump administration withheld nearly $400 million in aid from Ukraine at the same time the president and some of his political allies were pushing Zelensky to investigate Democrats.
Despite testimony from 17 officials that Trump leveraged his office for political gain, the president has maintained his innocence throughout the impeachment inquiry -denouncing it as an "attempted coup" and an "assault on America".
An email from Duffey to Deputy Secretary of Defense David Norquist on July 25, shortly after the Trump-Zelenskiy phone call, expressed uneasiness about the hold.
The emails also show that some Pentagon officials were concerned that withholding the aid from Ukraine, which relied on the money to defend itself against Russian aggression, was ill-advised policy and potentially unlawful. Mark Sandy, a career staffer in the White House Office of Management and Budget, told Congress in November that two OMB officials left the department because they believed the president's scheme - withhold aid until Ukraine met Trump's political demands - may have unfolded outside legal boundaries. The 1974 law restricts how a president can suspend congressionally approved funds.
Though these releases have been heavily redacted, they begin to shade in more detail about officials' exchanges regarding the Ukraine aid pause, which House Democrats pursued as they investigated and impeached the President but could not access because of the White House's refusal to comply with congressional subpoenas.
"From whom did Duffey get the order, and why did he do it?"
Trump is accused of trying to coerce his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden in a corruption case.
"Glad to have this behind us", Duffey wrote in a September 11 email to McCusker informing the Pentagon that the hold on the aid was being released.
However, there's a deadlock between Democrats and Republicans over how the Senate trial will be conducted.
Sen. Chris Murphy, a Democrat from CT, said Saturday on Twitter that the new documents, which CPI - a nonprofit investigative journalism organization - reported late Friday, show that the internal notes show Trump's "direct involvement" in the matter.
The Democrats on Sunday seized on a newly-released email on military aid to push for more testimony in the impeachment of United States President Donald Trump, as the White House signalled it was comfortable with plans by Senate Republicans to avoid calling any new witnesses.
Americans are "looking for a fair trial, not a fake trial", Klobuchar, a 2020 presidential hopeful, said on CNN's "State of the Union".
