Every year around this time, social media brims with people declaring their bold New Year's resolutions - to hit the gym, to save more money, to learn to play the piano. "Unfortunately, not everyone is successful in achieving their goal to improve their health by the end of the year".
When choosing your New Year's resolution, make sure it is something realistically achievable.
"Rather than saying 'I failed, ' try saying, 'You know, I didn't reach my goal, but I learned an bad lot;' - try to rejuvenate that intention, and that determination, and that willingness to make another run at it", said Dr. Bea. The 11-day festivities saw the Baylonians make resolutions to keep themselves to appease the gods. So how do you go about saving more?
Many experts say that simple changes in how you approach your resolution can significantly increase your odds of success. How do you plan to keep it?
While we all have our sets of resolutions depending on where we are and where we should be headed.
Local veteran Joe Baier also has hopes to "get back" to being financially stable in the new year, as well as maintaining a more positive path in life. You may have a new dietary restriction, such as a food allergy or intolerance. Such vague and common goals, however, are easily forgotten; 80% of resolutions are abandoned by mid-February, and only 8% are ever accomplished.
Break down your resolution. Dig deep and learn about the things that make you happy or sad, and you might just find it helps you focus on what's important. This could include actions like ordering a healthier side dish such as a salad instead of fries with your meal, or having one serving of fruit with breakfast in the morning. "There's an very bad lot of stress lingering from the holidays, you still have to take down holiday decorations; you still have to pay bills associated with the holidays so, you might pick a slightly later time, when things are a little more tranquil".
Finally, seek support. Don't face the stress of reaching your goals alone.
And I will no longer tolerate individuals who are blatantly out for all they can get, happily stamping on other people's lives along the way. It would be a good idea to unwind and pick up the books you had always wanted to read and add to your knowledge base.
So whether you use an app that tracks your spending or how long your runs are, there are many ways you can monitor the steps you're taking. Only when you are doing something for you can you truly be committed to changing for the better.
Don't get discouraged. It's okay if you have setbacks while working to achieve your resolution. "If the whole experience goes well then I think I can come to the conclusion that I can trust my gut and go for insane things", she says. Don't let setbacks prevent you from continuing to work toward achieving your resolution - keep trying. In fact for many who have been engaged in a constant struggle to make both ends meet, a New Year - whether of the Gregorian calendar or of the Indian - simply means nothing but another year of hard work and suffering.
Another promising 366 days lie ahead with New Year 2020 as we draw curtains to Year 2019.
Whatever you do, do not embrace the elusive New Year's resolution just because that's what everyone does.
