Manchester United are close to signing of Sporting CP midfielder Bruno Fernandes, but a rival Premier League side believed to be Tottenham has now entered the race, with the Lisbon club's officials travelling to London to hear their proposal.
It's nearly the halfway point of the winter transfer window and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is yet to purchase any players despite the obvious need for investment.
The objective was to see if a deal could be struck for Bruno Fernandes and whether a United player could be included in the operation.
Solskjaer does need a few more players before his revolution can be complete so it's not as if the work is done just yet.
Bruno Fernandes is valued at nearly 65 million euros but United hope to sign him for a lower fee by including one of their players in the deal.
The Portuguese worldwide has already racked up 13 goals and 13 assists in his 24 games for Sporting Lisbon this season so the attacking midfielder would provide a huge goal threat at Old Trafford or White Hart Lane.
Luckily for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the Manchester United hierarchy, it is now January which means the transfer window is open, and with their extensive transfer budget, they can afford to add some quality this month.
However, it must be remembered that the renowned Italian journalist made a very similar sort of claim (Twitter) in the summer transfer window and it did not turn out to be true.
Sporting coach Silas had claimed he is in the dark over United's interest in his star man. Marcos Rojo was offered as part of the package. I can't talk about individuals that play for other clubs, but I've got to say I do have backing.
"We do have the backing to do something if the right thing comes up in this window". The owners, Ed (Woodward), they know what we're building towards'.
