Sales plunged 37% in 2018, following a 6% drop in 2019.
Automakers had enjoyed double-digit annual growth in China as recently as four years ago before the brakes came on with sales contracting in 2018, the first annual contraction since the 1990s.
On Monday, Ford said its China auto sales slumped more than a quarter in 2019 for a third year of decline.
Automobile sales fell a modest 0.1 percent in December.
Once the world's hottest automotive market, China is now the world's hottest disappointing market as new vehicle sales fell 8.2% in 2019, with Ford China getting hit hard, posting a 26.1% fall and General Motors declining 15%.
Sales have now dropped for 18 months in a row.
Ford has recently announced its plan to roll out over 30 new models in China over the next three years, out of which 10 will be electric vehicles. It saw sales slide 6% in 2017, the previous year the country saw a sales increase. China's NEV sales jumped 62 per cent in 2018 but a subsidy cut hurt sales a year ago.
In 2020, the subsidy policy for the NEVs sector will remain largely stable, Xinhua learned from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, adding there will be no big subsidy retreats.
In China, Ford makes cars through its joint venture with Chongqing Changan Automobile and Jiangling Motors.
"We expect the market downturn to continue in 2020, and anticipate ongoing headwinds in our China business", Matt Tsien, president of GM China, said last week as the U.S. automaker reported a 15 per cent drop in 2019 China sales.
Toyota Motor Corp sold around 1.62 million Toyota and premium Lexus cars in China last year, a 9% sales jump compared with a year earlier. While that was an improvement from 2018's 36.9 percent decline, the total number of vehicles sold was less than half of the 1.27 million figure reached in its peak year of 2016.
"The pressure from the external environment and downward trend of the industry volume will continue in 2020, and we will put more efforts into strengthening our product lineup with more customer-centric products and customer experiences to mitigate the external pressure and improve dealers' profitability", he said in a statement.
Ford's business in China started declining in late 2017, and the company has been trying to recover since then.
