Leafs Play Without A BreatherA back-to-back set is set to end this week for the Toronto Maple Leafs (28-19-7), who are visiting the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday, just 24 hours after hosting the Anaheim Ducks on the previous evening. Following the game, head coach Sheldon Keefe told reporters that he went through concussion protocol and passed, but was held out as a precaution.
Rickard Rakell took a tripping penalty late in the extra frame to give Toronto the man advantage, and Tavares tipped Marner's shot past Miller for the victor, but after the game head coach Sheldon Keefe was more concerned about the leads that his club could not hold than the exciting victory. "But we're just going to have to give him the night and see how he is in the morning". Andersen was able to finish the period before being replaced by Michael Hutchinson, who will get the nod on Wednesday. The Maple Leafs have slipped recently but still find themselves in fourth place in the Atlantic Division. And with Frederik Andersen now out due to a reported upper-body injury, he might be their starter for the time being.
This is an issue that the Maple Leafs have dealt with in past campaigns as well - the ability to close out contests.
Leafs defenceman Travis Dermott (illness) returned to the lineup after missing Saturday's 2-1 overtime win against Ottawa, while winger Kasperi Kapanen was also back following a one-game banishment to the press box for being late to Friday's practice.
However the Leafs fell short in their comeback endeavor, as McKegg notched an empty netter assisted by Buchnevich, who recorded his third point of the game to solidify a 5-3 win for the Blueshirts. "We don't want to get in that position, and it's been a position that we've been falling into quite a bit". We didn't do much that period, so we wanted to come out firing.
"We've just got to keep pushing along".
"At this stage we say day-to-day ... we don't really know".
That seems to be the mentality night in and night out with the Panthers.
The Panthers are 0-7 in their last seven meetings with the Maple Leafs in Toronto.
As for Pysyk, he was a big part of the Panthers offence on Monday, scoring three of the team's five goals.
Campbell got a nice hand from the crowd on his first save in blue and white early in the opening period, but had his post to thank a few minutes when Troy Terry found iron.
Auston Matthews had two goals and John Tavares also scored and added an assist for the Maple Leafs, who are in a tight race for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The 22-year-old equalled the career-high 40 he scored in his rookie season back in 2016-17, and tied the 34-year-old Oveckhin's league lead in 2019-20. He took an ill-advised holding-the-stick penalty in the offensive zone, when the puck was heading back toward the Leafs zone. Mitch Marner had two assists. Matthews scored his 37th as he looks ahead to 50.
Andreas Johnsson, planted onto the Matthews line when William Nylander was a game-time scratch due to the flu, scored in the first period for the Leafs.
