"I have chosen Salah in an expanded list of 50 players to select 18 players heading to Tokyo".
Salah participating in the event would see him miss a huge chunk of pre-season, with Olympic event kicking off on July 22 and the final falling on the same day as the opening of the Premier League season - August 8.
"We can not force Salah to participate with us because Federation Internationale de Football Association regulations do not force him to participate".
Egypt under-23s boss Shawky Garib saidt: "Out of the three senior players we'll call-up, Salah is the only one we're settled on so far because he's simply one of the top three players in the world".
Gharib, however, insists he won't "force" Salah into participating, saying the decision lies with Salah, Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp.
"Yet I still notice that there's going to be a tough discussion to be had in between Klopp and also Salah over whether the Egyptian goes to this summertime's Olympics".
"I wish we could have whole squad together for pre-season but that is not possible for different reasons".
Egypt are one of three African nations taking part in the Games, alongside Ivory Coast and South Africa, and will submit their final list of 18 players for the tournament in June. "I will speak with Mo and all that stuff".
