Spotted: Sade on the “Keep a Child Alive Black Ball” Red Carpet

Singer Sade made a rare red carpet appearance at the Keep a Child Alive Black Ball in New York. Savour it people cos the next time you may see her on any red carpet could be another 5 years!

Some blogs slammed Sade’s dress saying it wasn’t fashion forward…Gosh most everyone be Rihanna/Gaga edgy now? Whatever happened to wearing a dress that simply looked nice on you?! So if I don’t wear a dress with shoulder pads reaching the ceiling, a top slit down to my navel and makeup like a drag queen, I’m not fashionable…please!

Other celebs at the event were Usher, Jayonce, Alicia Keys, Swizz Beats, Whitney Houston, and Jennifer Hudson. More pictures after the jump.

Fashion: Temple Muse’s La Dame La Muse

Fashion and style took center stage at the La Dame La Muse a fashion event held in Lagos by Temple Muse to celebrate Nigeria’s 50th independence anniversary. Designers on show at the champagne dinner were; Duro Olowu, Ituen Basi, Jewel by Lisa, Lanre Da-Silva Ajayi, Maki Oh, Momo, Nkwo, Odio Mimonet, Rocks & Roses, Samantha Cole, Sunny Rose, Tebazile, Tiffany Amber who each designed exclusive one of a kind pieces in honor of Nigeria’s golden jubilee celebration. the event was compered by IT girl Georgina Eku Edewor & the evening entertainment was provided by soul singer Bez.

As with most events in Lagos it was a red carpet (in this case black) carpet affair. The who’s who of Nigerian fashion, business & politics turned out in their gladrags & handbags in a quest to upstage each other to mingle, break bread & raise money for charity. Proceeds from all pieces sold will go to the International Women’s Society Charity.

If you’re in Lagos this week please, please take time out to attend Journey Through Life, Love and Friendship a photographic exhibition by Tamilore Kuboye, showing from the September 16th to 19th 2010 at Sofitel The Moorhouse, Ikoyi, Lagos. The exhibition marks the the13th anniversary of celebrated singer Fran Kuboye’s (Tamilore’s mother) passing. Tami’s love of photography stems from what she describes as not having a lot of pictures with her mom, she says,

My late mother and I hardly ever took any pictures and now, I make it a point to capture the moments and expressions of life as they happen

The photographs which are also for sale depict intimate expressions caught on film. Definitely a must see exhibition, I have seen Tami’s pictures and they are fab!

The exhibition is sponsored by FRANJIPANI’S MOMENTS and admission is free (now you can’t go wrong with that :)). The arts in Nigeria need all the support it can get,  please, please show some love by attending.

Naija Corner at Notting Hill Carnival 2010

I spent yesterday recovering from my amazing Notting Hill Carnival experience, which took place on Monday August 30th in London. It was my first time attending the event which has taken place annually since it’s inception in 1966 to celebrate the British African Caribbean community.

It was a beautiful day and though I got there late, I was still able to  experience the best from the Naija corner which has being going strong for over 10 years, the corner was positioned on Adela Street, and featured performances by the following artists: Banky W, 9ice, Femi Jaywon, Wale Gates, Julius Agwu, DJ Abbass , DJ Jimmy Jatt & JJC with Tee-A compeering the show.

Unfortunately I missed the fantastic performances by Femi Jaywon, Wale Gates, JJC and the other supporting acts, but I got there just in time to see Banky W storm the stage with the Nigeria flag draped over him like a hoodie. Of course the ladies went wild as he started to tease and please us with hits like: Ebute Metta Lagos Party, Kele, Strong Ting & Big Boy (his song with eLDee). One lucky girl got to be serenaded by him —- I was so jealous as was every other female in the crowd. It was a high-energy performance and Banky W supported by DJ Jimmy Jatt (who spun on the DJ set) got the crowd singing along to every word.

Events: Notting Hill Carnival, Crack Ya Ribs (London)

It’s bank holiday weekend this weekend, so there are quite a few events lined up. London will once again host the annual Notting Hill carnival, which gets under way on Saturday 28th August with the steel band competition. Sunday 29th is Kids’ Day, when the costume prizes are awarded and on Bank Holiday Monday 30th August, the main parade takes place and Nigeria will be represented in a big way with a float featuring a number Nigeria music and movie stars.

The Nigeria corner will make its return after the main parade with a Lagos styled concert planned by the organizer’s Sodium Brand Solutions to celebrate and showcase Nigerian music and culture. Lined up to perform are Banky W, DJ Jimmy Jatt, DJ Abass and Wales Gates. Over 40,000 Nigerians make the yearly pilgrimage to the carnival, which attracts over 3 million tourists.
